Get It Straight – Flat Iron

In this lesson, you will learn how to straighten your daughter’s kinky hair using a flat iron.

1

2

Apply a small amount of moisturizer or a heat protectant to protect the hair from the heat.

3

Part the hair into small sections. Working in sections makes the flat ironing process much easier. Use a hair clip to keep the hair out of the way until you are ready to flat iron.

4

Begin by parting an even smaller sub-section of hair about a quarter of an inch from the hair line.

Tip:If your daughter’s hair is very fine, you can use a little larger section.

5

Comb the section before flat ironing to make sure the hair is smooth and free from tangles.

Tip:Use more heat with kinky hair

6

Place the flat iron at the top of the section without touching the scalp. Use small sections of hair, making sure that each section of hair fits in between the width of the flat iron plates.

7

To achieve the optimum straightness, use slow and smooth passes to glide the flat iron down the entire length of the hair. You may have to use more than one pass of the flat iron to achieve the desire straightness.

8

Continue these steps until your flat ironing process is completed.

Tip:To create loose curls, bend the flat iron at the end of the hair

Take your daughter to a professional once every four months to have her ends trimmed. This will keep her hair healthy and guarantee a gorgeous flat iron look.

Flat irons range anywhere in between $10 and $200. We recommend a ceramic flat iron with a heat dial. The heat dial allows you to control the level of heat. Use lower heat settings for finer hair and higher for more coarse hair.
