Braid It Up

In this lesson, you will learn how to create a long lasting braided style by adding extensions. This is a great option when going on vacation.

1

Begin this process by shampooing, conditioning, and completely blow drying the hair. To learn how to how to properly wash, condition, and blow dry kinky hair, go to our Kinky Hair Video Lessons: Shampooing and Conditioning and Get It Straight - Blow Dry. Since you will be braiding the hair, your goal is to get the hair dry with the blow dryer and not to straighten it as we did prior to flat ironing.

2

Part the hair down the center in to two sections. Secure one section with a hair clip

3

We will be creating eight braids that run from front to back. Use a rat tail comb to part the first section of hair as shown.

4

Create a French braid by braiding the hair down the hair shaft and taking three strands of hair and crossing them one over the other.

Tip:If your daughter has short hair, add a strand of synthetic hair at the half way mark and another two thirds of the way down.

5

When you have completed the eight french braids, use a rod to curl the ends of the braids. Place the rod two inches from the end of the hair, and wrap the hair around the rod.

6

ONLY do this step when you add synthetic hair to braids or twists – DO NOT TRY THIS on natural hair. Dip the ends of the hair in a bowl of hot water for two minutes. CAUTION – the water is hot, so be extremely careful. After removing the hair from the water, have a towel ready to towel blot to remove excess water. Let the hair cool and remove the rod.

7

Finish the look by removing the rods.

Tip:Tie your daughter’s hair up at night with a scarf to keep this braided up style neat.
